New website dedicated to the imaging technology courses

Imaging Courses Website

A new website dedicated to the imaging technology courses has been launched: http://imaging.courses/.

It includes a long presentation of the courses, a detailed breakdown of the courses per section and an agenda of the upcoming courses.

We are also currently conducting a survey about the course contents, course location, course prices and course organization to further improve the course in the future. It has also been expanded with more advanced information about CMOS image sensors and the current market status and trends. The courses are also now available as a one day beginner level introduction or the usual three days advanced course.

Several courses are already scheduled in the near future at several locations worldwide. Contact us for early bird prices and registration.

Why Today's Industrial Cameras Require Modern and Complex Electronics

Industrial cameras are getting more complex than ever due to the advances in electronics performance, increased sensor speed and an increase in resolution requirements for higher performance or emerging applications. The time when a camera was simply an image sensor with its output bits packed on a CameraLink bus is now long behind. Today's cameras exhibit high speed computer interfaces and complex on-board real time processing that require state-of-the-art electronic design for board level, FPGA, processor and memory as well as thermal and mechanical know-how.

New options available for EMVA1288 test equipment

EMVA1288 logo

Under continuous development, the EMVA1288 test equipment family now has even more options.

As the EMVA1288 standard only provides a limited set of tests for defect pixels, Aphesa has implemented RTN analysis as part of our optional defect pixels modules. Some missing codes tests and exposure granularity tests have also been included. The tests have been proposed as additions to the standard during last month's EMVA1288 committee meeting.

We have also decided that the papers submitted on time will have priority for acceptance and oral presentation and that the papers submitted late, if allowed, will not participate to the best paper award or the best student paper award. Papers have already been submitted and are in the review process.

Our conference is still looking for sponsors for the awards. We are also discussing with some keynote speakers, the number of slots for traditional oral presentations will therefore be a little less than last year. We stress the importance of submitting on time.

The following plenary speakers are confirmed:

  • Brian Cabral, Director of Engineering at Facebook
  • Laura Waller, Head of UC Berkeley's Computational Imaging Lab
  • Gordon Wetzstein, Leader of the Stanford Computational Imaging Group

The conference chairs for 2017 are

  • Ralf Windenhorn, Portland State University
  • Arnaud Darmont, Aphesa

Blog articles

We have opened a new section on our website providing short blog-like publications related to cameras, image sensors or machine vision. There will be technical and non-technical articles. Three articles are already available.

Publication in the Xilinx Xcell journal

Our 2014 Vision Award Finalist camera has been featured in the latest edition of the Xilinx Xcell journal in an article called How to extend the operating temperature of FPGAs. Our high temperature camera for oil and gas wells inspection requires to operate at very high temperatures above the specified operating junction temperature of the FPGAs and with limited cooling possibilities. This article explains how we have achieved this.

The article can be downloaded from our website.

Vision 2016

Aphesa will exhibit at the Stuttgart 2016 Vision Show at 1B80 (same as last year). Free access passes will be available on our website. We will demonstrate and explain our latest products, services and capabilities.

Next Imaging Technology Training Sessions

After the large success of the previous editions, with already more people trained in 2016 than over the whole year in 2015, we continue our Imaging Technology training sessions. Aphesa has trained more than 150 people over the past 12 months.

The courses include: an introduction to imaging and machine vision, light, light sources, scenes, optics and lenses, industrial cameras, photography techniques, CMOS vs CCD image sensors, line scan imaging, color imaging, multi and hyperspectral imaging, in depth CMOS image sensor course, semiconductors production, high dynamic range made out of multiple exposures, high dynamic range made with special CMOS sensors, high speed and real time imaging, 3D imaging, mobile imaging, image processing, camera characterization, the EMVA1288 standard, high temperature imaging, infrared imaging, photography, industrial camera design and industrial camera standards.

The following sessions are now open for registration (click on the link for a PDF with details):

The training in Brussels is a little longer than the other sessions because of the availability of more equipment.

Other training sessions are under preparation in Singapore (April or May) and in Stuttgart in November. Singapore will be the last training in Asia in 2016.

We currently do not plan any other training sessions in 2016 and will only propose two or three dates in 2017.

Most of the sessions have been dedicated in-company training. We continue to offer this highly requested custom in-company training at any time of the year and any location worldwide. This version of the training has more value for a company and is cost-wise more interesting for larger groups.

New options available for EMVA1288 test equipment

EMVA1288 logo

Under continuous development, the EMVA1288 test equipment family now has even more options.

As the EMVA1288 standard only provides a limited set of tests for defect pixels, Aphesa has implemented some common defect pixel detection methods and various ways to detect defect pixels clusters. These new tests are grouped in the optional software modules "defect pixels module 1" and "defect pixels module 2". Module 2 is an add-on to module 1 with even more tests.

Our test software now also offers an optional DSNU/PRNU module that provides more information about the structure of the DSNU and PRNU and stores DSNU reference images and PRNU correction maps.

The calculation speed has been further increased and a higher performance computer with a GPU unit for even faster calculations is now also proposed.

And last but not least, a second round of production cost reduction has yield to even lower prices for the test equipment, now starting at 22750 euro.

Camera simulation software

Simulation software screen shot

Aphesa developed an image sensor and camera simulation software that generates simulated images based on various image sensor, camera and scene parameters including light source, noises, fixed pattern noise, linearity models, defect pixels models, dark current models, crosstalk, quantum efficiency, pixel size, full well size, missing codes, power supply noise, exposure time, gain, offset, quantization and many others.

Such a software allows camera users to simulate the performance of a camera in a given environment based on its datasheet. It also provides camera designers a mean to investigate camera design tradeoffs with a given image sensor. Linked with our EMVA1288 calculation software, it provides an EMVA1288 datasheet for every simulated camera and shows the performance evolution for various test scenarios.

The software is available in three versions:

  • EMVA1288 edition for our EMVA1288 equipment customers
  • Light version with limited features
  • Full version with all the most advanced models

The first two versions will be released in the coming weeks. A 10% discount is offered on pre-orders. The EMVA1288 edition is free for EMVA1288 equipment customers.

Discontinuation of SONY CCD sensors

SONY has recently announced the discontinuation of the CCD product lines and will in the future focus on CMOS products.

In our industry, the CCD sensors are still a significant portion of the camera sales and many of them are based on SONY CCD devices. It is no doubt that CCDs were going to be replaced by CMOS at some point as today's CMOS devices have reached a performance level equal or superior to CCDs. However, this change has been slow and the decision from SONY to stop the production of CCD devices forces everybody to change their cameras in the very near future.

APHESA can design custom cameras with CMOS sensors that will behave very similarly to some of the current SONY CCD based cameras and these custom cameras will also bring more advantages for the customers as they can be customized to the specific needs of each application and embed additional features specific to an application.

APHESA has experience and reference designs with CMOS image sensors from CMOSIS, AWAIBA, APTINA, FillFactory (now ON semiconductors), MELEXIS, OMNIVISION and others. APHESA also has experience with custom designed image sensors for situations where a standard image sensor that fulfills all the customer's requirements is not available. Our experience also includes various embedded processing algorithms and camera interfaces like CameraLink, USB, GigE-Vision, and more.

Since 2008, APHESA has always focused on CMOS technology, anticipating the end of the CCD era. Therefore NO APHESA PRODUCTS, standard or custom, WILL BE DISCONTINUED due to the SONY announcement.

APHESA is your partner for the design of custom cameras. We can help you with your imaging project.

Again in 2015, we can help you with your imaging projects, whether it is a custom camera design, a custom light source, a specific software, an evaluation board, a production test equipment, an EMVA1288 characterization, a custom image sensor feasibility or consulting about high dynamic range imaging or any other imaging topic.

Full day course about High Dynamic Range Imaging

A full day course will be taught at the Hilton Union Square in San Francisco on February 8th 2015 during Electronic Imaging (at the same time as Photonics West).

This course provides attendees with an intermediate knowledge of high dynamic range image sensors and techniques for industrial and non-industrial applications. The course describes various sensor and pixel architectures to achieve high dynamic range imaging as well as software approaches to make high dynamic range images out of lower dynamic range sensors or image sets. The course follows a mathematical approach to define the amount of information that can be extracted from the image for each of the methods described. Some methods for automatic control of exposure and dynamic range of image sensors and other issues like testing, image formats, color and glare will be introduced. Some photography techniques will also be introduced.

More information about the short course.

All attendees will receive a copy of the book "High Dynamic Range Imaging: Sensors and Architectures".

New release of the EMVA1288 test equipment

A new release of the EMVA1288 test equipment is available. This new release includes support for more CameraLink cameras (cameras with binary interfaces, exposure control via external pins CCx), Gen<i>cam 2 cameras and the Aptina DevWare evaluation suite.

The software is now also multilingual and supports more camera features.

New software modules for the EMVA1288 test equipment are regularly introduced.

The software upgrades are free for all existing customers and the price of new equipments is unchanged.

Our test equipment is certified EMVA1288 version 3.0. The EMVA1288 technical working group, to which Aphesa participates, has drafted a new version of the standard (3.1). The upgrade of the test equipment to EMVA1288 v3.1 will be free for all users.

The EMVA1288 standard is a standard of hardware equipment and software algorithms to measure and specify image sensors and cameras for machine vision use.

The EMVA1288 test equipment comes turn-key, complete with light sources, camera mounts, interfacing electronics for many camera standards, a pre-installed computer and transport cases.
